10th Grade Honors: The year will begin with a research paper, followed by a short story unit that will include "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov and "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. as well as a group project about a story by Edgar Allan Poe. Poetry will follow; you will learn the Close Reading method with poems by Poe, Angelou, Marlowe, Raleigh, and Williams. You will read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou to see a personal account about overcoming struggles and extreme situations,Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (a story about the influences and effects of imperialism in Africa) accompanied by selections from Roots by Alex Haley, and Night by Elie Wiesel and Hiroshima by John Hersey, which you will read outside of class in order to complete student-taught lessons. During the year, you will be expected to complete two independent book projects and participate in literature circles surrounding books/journals written by anonymous teens. The literature circle books include Go Ask Alice, Lucy in the Sky, The Book of David, Calling Maggie May, Jay's Journal, Breaking Bailey, and Letting Ana Go.
