10th Grade English: begin with a unit about citing research in MLA while using the application called Noodle Tools. While we do that in class, students may participate in literature circles on Mondays and Fridays in which they read portions of a book (outside of class), complete a discussion page based on a certain role, and discuss various aspects of the book with their group. Students will choose from the books in the series by Anonymous; Go Ask Alice, Letting Ana Go, Breaking Bailey, Book of David, Jay's Journal, Lucy in the Sky, and Calling Maggie May.
During the school year, students will read To Be a Slave by Julius Lester (real accounts of people who survived slavery in the United States) accompanied by a "Nigerian Folktale." You will also read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie (a story about the difficulties of growing up in poverty on an Indian reservation) and the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee about a young girl growing up in the South during the 1930s who learns of racism through the mistreatment of members of her community. The following short stories; "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl and "Harrison Bergeron" (and the film version, 2081) by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., along with some others, will also be a part of the year. You will also complete two research projects and a short unit on poetry during which you will read several poems by Sherman Alexie to lead into the novel, while also determining the central idea and practicing text-analysis responses (part III of the English 11 Regents). During the year, you will be expected to complete one or two independent reading assignments and project/presentations.
